Adoption Update!!

From My Sister-In-Law:

Doing the I-171H Approval Dance Okay, so you can't see me right now, but the title of this post is what I'm doing right now...because I just went out to check the mail and....we have received our "Favorable Approval Notice" from USCIS, otherwise known as the I-171H form!! WOO-HOO!!! This means we can now turn in our dossier to the country!! I guess my little phone messages that I have kindly left our agent at the USCIS offices have been received (and the one I left today will be kindly disregarded). We know that October holds a lot of action for our adoption...please especially pray over a grant that we have applied for and is coming up for review sometime in October. If you've been around us much lately, you'll probably hear us muttering "Let God Show Up" under our breath...with so much on our minds and hearts these days, this is the phrase and mindset that is keeping us going in light of the (hopeful!!) uncertainty before us. I'm so excited right now...but alas I MUST focus and work... Still Dancing, Kendra :)

Another Fundraising Idea

I'm so excited that we have raised $300 so far for Fluff Baby Home! I've been trying to think of ways to generate more donations since it seems like December is fast approaching! My goal is to raise $2,000 by the end of December.  Perhaps it's a lofty goal, but it's my goal nonetheless.  

You guys gave me some great ideas on the Fluff Baby Home facebook page.  I've decided to try and put together a Cloth Diaper Dream Package to raffle off.  Mandatory entry will require a $5 donation.  If you have already donated, that counts.  You wouldn't have to donate again.  That $5 will get you the 50 entries into the giveaway.  Additionally, every $5 you donate will gain you 50 more entries.  And of course, I will offer other extra entry methods as well!

Infantino Balance Review: My New Favorite Carrier

Recently, I was given the opportunity to review the new ergonomically designed Infantino Balance baby carrier.  And, I have to say, I am impressed.  At a price point of around $60, you get more than your money's worth.  

Let's start with the features I love:

• Thick, padded shoulder straps don't dig into my shoulders leaving me uncomfortable.
  
  
• Lumbar support makes carrying around a 25 lb. 10 month old and a 35 lb. 3 1/2 year old easy--and doesn't kill my back!
  
  
• Natural seat makes it comfortable for baby and momma.  The 3 1/2 year old said she felt like she was sitting in a seat.  She also said it was the most comfortable of my carriers (I have several).
  
  
• Adjustable chest, waist, and lumbar straps make it easy to tailor fit it to your body!  It also allows the baby to fit snugly against your body--no crazy babies leaning way back! And the straps adjust very easily! Just pull to get the fit you want! I particularly like the chest straps.  I am able to position them in a good place on my chest--and they slide very easily! Also, I'm shorter and I still get a good fit with this carrier!
  
  
• Easy to Use! I only had to look at the directions once and I was able to use this carrier.   
  
  
  
• Evenly distributes the baby weight.  This means NO SORE BACK!
  
  
• Quilted interior fabric is soft on baby's skin.
  
  
  
• The price is going to give other similarly designed carriers a run for their money!

I tested this carrier with my 25 lb. 10 month old son and also with the 35 lb. 3 1/2 year old that I babysit.  35 pounds is the weight limit of the carrier and I wanted to test it out! Each child's weight was evenly distributed and made carrying them a cinch! The  3 1/2 year old asks to be carried in it all the time now! She loves it! And my son grins when I get the carrier out! I always strap him to my back during dinner time or when I'm hanging laundry on the line.  He loves to be close to his mama.  

Now, the instructions say that you need a 2nd person when putting the baby on your back.  I find that this is true for younger babies, but not necessary for the 3 1/2 year old.  She can just hop right on, no problems!  And I really love that you just have to read the instructions once to be able to use it.

My One Complaint:

Now, I do think there could be one improvement made.  I love wearing Collin on my hip and this carrier doesn't allow that.  I do realize that my hip carrying days are almost over with how big he is getting, but for the time being, it'd be nice to be able to have that option as well.  

To Sum It Up:

• PHENOMENAL carrier.  
• Affordable.
• Durable.
• Well-made.
• Truly ergonomically designed.
• Easy to use.
• A Must-Have for Baby-wearing mommas and papas! 
• My carrier of choice! -- Honest, I've already recommended it to several of my friends!

About 3 weeks ago, I contacted Tommee Tippee to see if I might be able to review their sippy cups.  As Collin is getting to the age where he wants to drink by himself, I was anxious to find a product that would help him be successful.  I had heard such awesome things about Tommee Tippee--I had to see for myself!

The Advance-Flo technology is amazing.  He can get drinks so easily--sometimes I think he isn't getting anything...but he always is! And how do I know..because he's sure to let it dribble out of his mouth!

Best of all, it really is leak-proof.  Don't believe me...watch this video:

Awesome, right?

I look forward to trying more Tommee Tippee products as Collin progresses! And I will definitely  be recommending these cups to my friends and family.

Your Baby Can Read: A Review

About a month ago, I contacted the Your Baby Can Read company to see if I could review their products.  Having been an English teacher, I have always been drawn to their commercials.  Reading is very important in our family.  While my son is only 10 months old, we already read at least a book a day, if not more.  So, when I was given the opportunity to review the Deluxe Kit with mini-sliders, I was in heaven! 

To begin with, let me share with you what I actually received:

For Collin:

• Teaching Cards. 15 Fun Games with 83 double-sided Interactive Cards to play with your child!
  
  

 First Impressions:

This program is so cool! The videos capture Collin's attention right away...and keep it! The videos work in the following manner:

• There are a core group of words that each video focuses on.
  
  
  
  
• They show the word in a certain font on a colorful screen. 
  
  
  
  
• They have a boy say the word and then a girl say the word. I think this is particularly interesting.  In my Secondary Education classes at Ball State, we were taught to have a male and female student do each reading we introduced to the class.  I thought it was neat that this program was right in line with concepts I learned in college.
  
  
• While the word is said, an arrow follows underneath.
  
  
• Next, a picture/clip is shown to demonstrate the word.
  
  
• It moves on to the next word.
     
  
• It will then repeat the words--but what's really neat is that each time the word is repeated, it is in a different font with a different color screen behind it.  I like this because Collin isn't just going to associate the green screen with the word "toes".  He's actually going to learn the word. 
  
  

Along with the videos, I also received sliding word cards and lift-a-flap books for Collin.  He is ALL about the lift-a-flap! Right now, it's just a fun toy.  But I honestly believe it is going to be a learning tool in no time at all.

Lastly, I received a how-to for me and my husband.  I always like to be informed before I start something and their video does just that.  It also comes with a quick reference sheet that explains how you are supposed to effectively use this program.

Does it Work?

Well, it's too soon to tell.  But I have to share a neat story.  After about a week of watching the video a couple times a day, Collin did something really fun.  Ok, in the beginning there's this little kid who always says "Hi! Hi! I'm Graham.  We're going to read some words today.  Make sure you look at the words."  Well, one morning, Collin and I were watching it and when Graham said hi, Collin imitated the sound--he didn't say hi but he made a noise similar to the sound of Graham's voice.  How FUN is that?! 

I plan on giving monthly updates to let you know how Collin is doing! I really think this is going to be such a neat activity for us! 

Other Noteworthy Items:

The program has different levels.  For kids who can't read, it suggests watching the first video a couple times a day for a month.  Obviously, this is where we are at.  But it also has different suggestions based on your child's current ability. 

They take time to impress upon you that this is supposed to be FUN.  You aren't supposed to put pressure on yourself or your child.  This is an activity to do together.  Collin and I sit together and watch it.  When they say words like mouth or toes,  I always point to mine and his.  We are engaged TOGETHER.  That's what this program is about.  They don't want you to just plop your kid in front of the television and go do housework.  Get in there and have some fun! 

Is it Worth It?

How could it not be?  Collin is engaged.  He's having fun with mommy and daddy.  He's learning.  These skills are only going to help him as he enters into school in a few years.

ittybittybums Set of 12 Cloth Wipes Giveaway

It's a mommy and daddy team that run Bumcovered Diapers in Tiffin, Iowa! There weren't many cloth diaper stores around so they decided to open one up to spread the fluffy goodness! As I previously stated, they only sell diapers they have used and loved! They also carry several hand-made/custom made items.

My "Thank You" Giveaway

So, a few nights ago several of you posted on Abby's Lane's blog chat that I referred you.  While I didn't win first prize, they were so generous and gave me a runner-up prize of $15 to use at their store.  Well, I've been very lucky lately and quite frankly I don't really need any more diapers...so I thought as a thank you for giving me credit, I could give back to you! 

One of you is going to win any in-stock cloth diaper from Abby's Lane--up to $25 -- I mean, I'm a SAHM..not a millionaire, folks ;)  

But seriously, thank you for promoting Fluff Baby Home and Biehl Adventures.  Thank you for donating..we're almost to 300 dollars! Which, maybe that doesn't sound like a lot to some people, but it means a lot to me and my brother and sister-in-law.  Complete strangers are generously donating to help bring this little guy home from Africa...who, by the way, is stinkin' adorable!! (We got to see pictures recently!).
